Wednesday 21 December 2011

The crew here at Dockside must have been good this year because Santa and Capt. Arnoldi of the “Rosalena Marie,” have brought us just what we asked for…more fresh Dungeness crabs!!! With the arrival of a new load, we are pleased to offer fresh Dungeness crabs in the market through Christmas. Crabs will be available for $6.95 per pound with the option of having us cook, clean, and crack them for you or taking them live to cook at home. Remember that we cook each crab to order and each crab takes about 30 minutes. If you would like to call in you order ahead of time, it will help us cut down on your wait. Please be aware that both the Market and Restaurant will be closing at 4pm on Christmas Eve, Saturday the 24th, and will be closed Christmas day, Sunday the 25th.

If crabs aren’t what you had in mind, other fishing has been steady and we will be offering many other fresh local favorites. Our current case features Swordfish, Blackgill Rockfish, Vermilion Rockfish, Opah, Thresher Shark, Petrale Sole, Blackcod, Albacore, and even Louvar. Tuesday 13 December 2011

The 2011-12 Dungeness crab season is in full swing with fresh crawling crabs hitting the docks daily. Capt. Arnoldi of the “Rosalena Marie,” has been catching his share of crabs near Halfmoon Bay and bringing them to us here at Dockside. As always we are excited for this time of year and can’t think of a better way to celebrate the holidays than with a crab or two as a stocking stuffer…well maybe not in your stockings but definitely on your plate! To officially celebrate the arrival of this years crab, Dockside would like to announce the first Crabfest of the season!

For those of you who have participated in the past, you already know just what an enjoyable and memorable experience these can be. And for those of you who haven’t yet, now is the time to get in on the fun! So get ready to sit down with family and friends and roll up you sleeves and tie on that silly plastic bib because it’s finally here!

Starting Friday December 16th and continuing through Sunday December 18th, Dockside Restaurant and Fish Market will kick off the first Crabfest of the season! In the Restaurant, we will be offering a whole freshly steamed, cleaned, cracked and chilled Dungeness crab, served with warm melted butter and your choice of sides for $21.95. These crabs with all the fixings will be available for lunch or dinner.

In the Market, you have the option of taking these crabs live to cook yourself or, have us cook, clean, and crack, them for you. Either way, they run $6.95 per pound. The crabs right now are nice and large and average about 2lbs!

Crabfest is a one of our favorite events here at Dockside because it gives us a little extra time to sit down with family and friends and enjoy eating and laughing over a great meal. Please call ahead for reservations or to order crabs ahead of time for pick up.

Friday 09 December 2011

Ahoy,

The holiday season has swept in greeting us with frosty mornings and the refreshing smell of pine needles in the air. It’s the time of year when our senses are teased by fresh baked cookies, pies and other sinful treats. Oh…and did I forget to mention the savory aroma of steaming fresh and buttery Dungeness Crabs?

That’s right! Dockside is proud to announce the arrival of the first Dungeness Crabs of the season. Capt. Arnoldi of the “Rosalena Marie,” while fishing near Bodega Bay had some early success enabling us to feature his live Dungeness Crabs. These succulent crustaceans will be available in the market for $6.95 per pound with the option of taking them with you live, or having us cook cleaned and cracked them for you. Please remember that we cook each crab to order and cooking takes about 30 minutes. As always, feel free to call in your order ahead of time if you would prefer.

In other fishing news…Captain Roff of the “Diane Susan,” had another great offshore trip bringing us an assortment of pelagic species. His Bluefin Tuna, Swordfish, Opah, and Thresher Shark will be available in the market over the next few days. Be advised that the pelagic fishing season is drawing to a close and these fish may be the last pelagics that we will see this year. If you haven’t got your fix of fresh Bluefin,Tuna, Swordfish, Opah, and Thresher Shark, this is likely to be your last chance of the season.

Halibut fishing was also on the upswing this week thanks to landings from Capt. Mowry of the “No Name,” Capt. Sutner of the “Saturna,” and good ol’ Capt. Evans of the “Lucy L.” The continued efforts of these Captains allow us to offer Halibut at a time when coast wide supplies are extremely limited.

Thanks to all of our local captains for their daily efforts enabling us to share the bounties of the sea! Happy Holidays.

Thursday 10 November 2011

Ahoy,

The calm and brisk mornings of November have stealthily crept in and almost without warning winter seems to be upon us. Along with the changing seasons, many pelagic fisheries are now in full swing. This week, just in time for Veteran’s Day, we saw some successful trips of pelagic species such as Opah, Swordfish and especially Bluefin Tuna!

That’s right…Bluefin Tuna! Capt. Mulcaty of the “Calogera,” had a strong trip and has brought us a great supply of these magnificent fish. Did you know that the most expensive fish ever sold was a Bluefin Tuna? The 754-pound fish brought in approximately $400,000 making the loins valued at over $1,000 per pound! You’ll be pleased to find that this week the price per pound for loins at our Market will be an incredible $5.95 per pound! That’s right, Bluefin Tuna loins for $5.95 per pound! These fish will be available starting Friday, November 11th and continue through Sunday, November 13th. Supplies are strong but at such a great value may go quickly.

Just in case you missed it…here it is again… Starting Friday, November 11th and continuing through Sunday, November 13th … Fresh, Local, Bluefin Tuna Loins…$5.95 per pound…while supplies last! This is one of the best specials of the year and we wouldn’t want you to miss out on this great value.

Along with Bluefin Tuna, Captain Mulcaty had success with other species such as Swordfish and Opah while Capt Roff of the “Diane Susan,” delivered us some Opah as well. Swordfish will be available for $9.95 per pound and Opah will be available for $8.95 per pound throughout the weekend. Other fishing has also been strong including Blackgill Rockfish, Lingcod, Mako Shark, Soupfin Shark, Thresher Shark, and Halibut. All will be available in the Market this weekend.

Wednesday 19 October 2011

Ahoy,

We missed our posting last week however this is the time of the year that our weekly posting actually becomes more irregular than regular. We do like to remind you that our regular weekly postings begin on May 1st, and continue though October 31st and throughout the balance of the year our weekly posting only comes out on occasion.

So since today falls within that “balance of the year” we must be doing something special here at Dockside…and we are.

Capt. Buompenserio of the “Commander” has delivered us some more offshore pelagic fish that we only see this time of year, and we will be pleased to feature his Opah this weekend, starting Friday October 21st and continuing though Sunday October 23rd in the market and restaurant.

Did you know? Opah are a deeply keeled, compressed and disc shaped fish with conspicuous coloration: the body is a deep red-orange grading to rosy on the belly, white spots covering the flanks and bright vermilion colored fins. The large eyes are ringed with golden yellow.

Opah’s contain flesh that are three different colors. Both the top and bottom loin are sweet & lean with a texture somewhat like tuna, but the red breast meat is similar to pulled pork. We rarely put this breast meat in the case, but you may be able to talk Capt. Mark into giving you a piece to try. The tender top loin of Opah is a light salmon-orange or pink-rose color. The side and lower flesh of Opah is the same light salmon-orange color at the top but fades to a paler color at the bottom and slightly firmer than the top loin but becomes very tender with cooking.

So starting this Friday the 21st and continuing though Sunday 23rd, you’ll find Opah fillets for $6.95 a pound. Yes, $6.95 a pound.

Of course you’ll find some other great offshore pelagic’s this weekend from both Capt. Roff of the “Diane Susan” and Capt. Williams of the “Linde.” Whole Albacore for $2.95 a pound, Bluefin Tuna loins for $9.95 a pound, and Mako shark fillets for $5.95 a pound. Remember, staring Oct. 21st and continuing though Oct. 23rd, all these great values along with Opah fillets at $6.95 a pound, while supplies last.

Thanks

The Tognazzini family & crew

Wednesday 05 October 2011

Ahoy,

Wind, rain and waves pummeled the coast this morning with the intensity of a pugilist striving for the knockout. With foresight of the approaching storm, many of our local fishermen were able to land their catches and return ashore to wait out Mother Nature’s siege.

Albacore was the main target for many captains including Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” Capt. Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” and Capt Chin of the “Finaddict.” Their landings have been as good as we have seen it thus far and because of their success we are excited to offer fresh local Albacore for $2.95 per pound for whole fish or $7.95 per pound for fillets. Most fish range from 22 to 25 pounds! For those of you who are looking to get those jars out and can your own, or put some in the freezer for the winter, this is definitely the time! These fish are, hook and line caught, spiked, bled, gutted, and delivered to us iced and ready to cut. They are some of the finest Albacore available on the west coast and meet the rigorous standards set by us here at Dockside. Did you know that Capt. Mark when selling off the Bonnie Marietta, was the first to deliver Albacore handled this way at sea? Now we expect all fishermen that deliver to us to handle them the same way.

We will begin taking orders for these wonderful fish starting Thursday, October 6th and will begin cutting Friday, October 7th so feel free to call ahead. As always we will be happy to cut them free of charge.

Albacore wasn’t the only fishery that has had success this past week. Capt. Buompensiero of the “Commander,” had another successful offshore trip landing Swordfish, Opah, Mako Shark, and Louvar, while Capt. Williams of the “Linde,” brought us Bluefin Tuna and a few more Louvar. Those of you that have had Louvar know how special it is! We have also had strong landings of Halibut and a few White Seabass from Capt. Nelson of the “Trapper,” Capt. Loiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” and Capt. Campopiano of the “Island Hopper.” Landings of Lingcod, Vermilion Rockfish, and Bocaccio Rockfish from Capt. Eaton of the “Curly,” Capt. Benson of the “Wasn’t Me,” and Capt. Conchelos of the “Elizabeth Jane,” rounded out the week.

It has been another great week for you all to enjoy the fall bounties of resident fish, migratory fish, and even offshore pelagic fish including this weekends special of whole local Albacore. Remember they will be priced at $2.95 per pound for whole fish and as always we will cut them free of charge.

Tuesday 27 September 2011

Ahoy,

Warm Santa Anna winds blowing out of the east this morning let us know that change is in the air. It’s the time of year for pumpkins, football, and of course fresh fish from Dockside!!! Change is also in the air for this weeks fish list update due to some good landings along with a busy Harbor Festival weekend fast approaching. Because of both, we have decided to update everyone from our normal Thursday to an earlier Tuesday.

The selection in the Market continues to be outstanding due to successful trips from many captains that provide local fish for us. Capt. This week starting tomorrow and continuing through Harbor Festival weekend we will feature his Swordfish steaks for $10.95 per pound. White Seabass fishing slowed a bit in recent days but because of efforts from Capt. Nelson of the “Trapper,” and Capt. Dunn of the “Fog Dog,” we will once again offer local White Seabass fillets for $9.95 per pound. Great values for both these spectacular fish. Once again, Wednesday, September 28th and continuing though Sunday, October 2nd local Swordfish at $10.95 per pound and local White Seabass at $9.95 per pound.

Hafer of the Kathryn H. As you can see our variety and selection of fresh local fish is just about as good as it gets!!!

Both the Restaurant and Market will be open regular hours throughout the week and will also be featuring a pre Harbor Fest party at the Market on Friday September 30th. This kick off will start at 4:00 P.M. featuring the music of Lenny Blue and Friends and is a great way to ease into a festive weekend. Lenny will play again on Saturday and will be joined by “Good Medicine” who will entertain us again all day on Sunday.

One last note about this weekend and Harbor Festival…if you desire to come to Dockside you may enter FREE at the “Volunteer Gate” on the east side of the festival and just tell them you want to go to Dockside. If you have any problems accessing us this weekend please feel free to call either Marc at 748-9995, or Capt. Mark at 441-1451, or for those of you that may find a long walk a difficulty, call and we will arrange a FREE pickup with the Dockside Mule.

Both captains had successful trips, landing Opah, Mako Shark, Swordfish, Bluefin Tuna, and Albacore. Due to their success, we will be featuring one of our favorites, Opah this week for $7.95 per pound in the Market.

Thursday 15 September 2011

Ahoy,

Albacore fishing continues to be spotty at best, but this week we did see landings from a few more of our local captains. Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” Capt. Van Wagner of the “Pure Adrenaline,” Capt. Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” and Capt. Schuyler of the “Flyer,” have all landed a few fish making local Albacore available once again here at Dockside. Their success has allowed us to feature these incredible fish starting Friday September 16th and continuing through Sunday September 18th for $3.95 per pound for whole fish or $8.95 per pound for fillets. With over fifty percent return, you will have under $8.00 per pound in fillets if you purchase a whole fish and as always we will be happy to cut it for you free of charge. For those of you looking to can this year, this may be the time as we hope for but can’t promise fish later this season.

While not fishing Albacore, Capt Schuyler of the “Flyer,” and Capt. Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” were both able to locate some late season White Seabass. Along with catching White Seabass, Capt. Conners was also able to land a few Halibut adding to the selection here at Dockside. White Seabass will be available for $14.95 per pound for fillets and Halibut will be available for $16.95 per pound for fillets in the Market through the weekend while supplies last.

Capt. Cunningham of the “Tommy Lynn II,” had another nice trip fishing for Blackgill Rockfish. Supplies of are strong and will be available in the Market for $9.95 per pound for fillets. If you would rather have us prepare it for you, Chef Joel will be putting his touches on this favorite in the Restaurant as “Fish of the Day.”

Thursday 08 September 2011

Ahoy,

Labor day has come and gone and with it so has the summer. The steady stream of tourists is slowing to a crawl and the persistent fog is fading away to beautiful afternoons. This is the time of year that we here on the Central Coast look forward to the most. This is also the time of year when fishing shifts gears and we begin to see a variety of new fish species. Last weeks landings of Albacore suggest the onset of this change and gets us excited us to what may be in store.

The few Albacore landed late last week by Captain Nailen of the ‘Seeker,” didn’t last long but Capt. Schuyler of the “Flyer” and Capt. Chin of the ‘Fin Addict,” brought us a few more this week to replenish our supplies. These marvelous fish will be available again this weekend in the Market for $10.95 per pound for fillets or $4.95 per pound whole. In our Restaurant, Chef Joel has been extremely excited with the arrival of these fish and has featured them in a variety of specials including sesame crusted… Mmmmmmm!!!

Rockfish and Lingcod fishing has continued to stay steady this week. Capts. Bengston and Baldwin of the “Wasn’t Me,” had landings of Vermilion Rockfish and Yellowtail Rockfish, while Capt Louiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” Capt Campopiano of the “Island Hopper,” Capt Tobin of the “Pleasure,” Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” and Capt. Kann of the “C,” have all had landings of Lingcod and other assorted Rockfish.

We hope that as the hectic summer pace slows, you will find the time to enjoy the wonderful weather and fresh local seafood with us here at Dockside.

Friday 2 September 2011

Ahoy,

Ol’ King Neptune along with Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” must have read last weeks email because they have answered our prayers and delivered us the first Albacore of the season late last night. Although we have only received a few fish thus far, it gives us hope as to what may be on the way over the next couple of weeks. With that said, fresh, local Albacore will be available in the Market this week starting Friday September 2nd for $10.95 per pound. Be advised that we only have a few fish and with the busy Labor Day weekend upon us, supplies won’t last long.

The fishing Gods must have also been smiling down on Capt. Cunningham of the Tommy Lynn II,” as he had another great trip fishing Blackgill Rockfish. Due to his efforts, supplies of this wonderfully moist and flaky fish will be strong throughout the weekend. This fish is a favorite here at Dockside and will be available for $8.95 per pound for fillets in the Market and also featured as Fish of the Day in the Restaurant.

This week we were also fortunate to see landings from many of our other local captains including Capt. Evans of the “Lucy L.” His catch of Halibut, Sand Sole, and Turbot will available in the Market this weekend. Lingcod fishing also continues to stay steady as Capt. Louiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” Capt Tobin of the “Pleasure and Capt. Kann of the “C,” have all brought us a few fish.

With the close of the California Salmon season this past week; we have once again brought in some Silver “Coho” Salmon from Alaska. These troll caught fish are a great value and with the close of the Alaskan season soon approaching, may be the last fresh Salmon that we see this year. These fish will be available for $13.95 per pound in the Market throughout the weekend.

Finally, You may be interested to know that Dockside has been featured in this month’s issue of Sunset Magazine. We are mentioned in an articles as one of 5 hot spots from Vancouver BC through SoCal. Recognition such as this is due to all of you and your continued support

Thursday 25 August 2011

Ahoy,

September is just around the corner and with the blink of an eye; summer seems to be slipping away. Along with the fading summer, fishing should soon be shifting gears and opening the doors to a variety of new fish. Although we have not seen any yet…we are hopeful that the next few weeks will bring us an assortment of pelagic species such as, Albacore, Swordfish, Opah, Louvar, Mako and Thresher Shark.

In the meantime, Halibut and White Seabass fishing have both slowed to a crawl this week. Capt. Buomponsiero of the “Commander,” was able to find a few White Seabass early in the week, while Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” and Capt. Nelson of the “Trapper,” landed a few White Seabass and Halibut over the last few days. Supplies of both fish are extremely limited and may not last through the weekend, so if you are having a craving for either, hurry in!

With the California King Salmon season drawing to an end we have decided to bring in a few more Silver “Coho” Salmon from Snow Pass Alaska. These gorgeous and petite fish are a great answer to the limited supplies of King Salmon this year. We will be featuring these beauties in the Market for $11.95 per pound for fillets starting Friday the 26th and continuing through Sunday the 28th while supplies last.

Lingcod and Rockfish fishing remains strong and supplies look good throughout the weekend. Landings from Capt. Kann of the “C,” Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” Capt. Eaton off of his kayak, and Capt Louiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” have kept us in good supply of Lingcod as well as a few Vermilion Rockfish, Copper Rockfish, and Brown Rockfish.

Finally, for those of you who enjoy our deep fried fish specials available in the Market, this week we have a new delight…Barred Surfperch. Trevor Johnson while fishing from shore has brought us a few of these extremely delicate and moist fish. These fish are great fried whole and will be available this weekend for $4.95 each.

Thursday 18 August 2011

Ahoy,

There hasn’t been much talk about the California Salmon season recently because we have seen very little local production over the past few weeks. There has however been a few fish landed further north and both Capt. Ward of the “Dancing Bear,” and Capt. Entwisle of the “Traveler,” capitalized on some of the action while it lasted. Both captains delivered us a few King Salmon from Half Moon Bay and Bodega Bay respectively. With landings slowing statewide, their fish may be some of the last fresh Salmon that we see this season. With that said, we will have their catch available in the Market this weekend for $19.95 per pound.

White Seabass fishing slowed earlier in the week but we have seen some increased landings the last couple of days making it available once again in both the Market and Restaurant. Halibut fishing has also slowed but we will feature them one last time for $12.95 per pound for fillets in the Market. If you haven’t got your Halibut fix in, don’t miss this opportunity at a great value. Of course, Halibut will also be featured as daily specials in Restaurant throughout the weekend.

Here it is again… Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 20th, 21st, and 22nd … Local Halibut fillets for $12.95 a pound. Thanks to Capt.’s Conners, of the “Silver Bullet,” Capt. Nakazawa of the “Arima,” Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” Capt. Schuyler of the “Flyer” Capt. Van Wagner of the “Pure Adrenaline,”and Capt. Nelson of the “Trapper” for their continued efforts at keeping this wonderful fish available.

Of course we can’t forget Capt. Tobin, of the “Pleasure,” Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” Capt. Burbach of the “Mas Fina,” Capt. Kann of the “C,” and Capt. Eaton of the “Kayak,” for their Lingcod, Gopher Rockfish, Vermillion Rockfish, Yellowtail Rockfish, Blue Rockfish and Black and Yellow Rockfish just to name a few. They always seem to keep us supplied with a nice variety of some of our favorite fish.

Friday 12 August 2011

Ahoy,

Calm seas and an ample supply of feed “mostly squid” have kept fishing strong this past week. Did you know? The lighted boats that have been present offshore at night this past week are actually “light boats” fishing for squid. The lights from these boats attract the squid to the surface so that another boat with a purse seine net can encircle the squid and catch them. As you can imagine, with the abundant amount of squid around this year, the fish that feed on them like Halibut and White Seabass also seem to be fairly abundant.

With that said, landings of White Seabass and Halibut have once again been consistent from our core group of small boat captains. With the fish biting we have also seen landings from a handful of new captains including, Capt. Nelson of the “Trapper,” Capt. Fox of the “Toro,” Capt. Bengston of the “Wasn’t Me,” and Capt. Isbell of the “Lil Izzy.”The continued success of our local fleet has allowed us to once again feature their catches in both the Market and the Restaurant.

So… Once again we are pleased to offer White Seabass fillets for $9.95 per pound and Halibut fillets for $12.95 per pound. These outstanding values will be available in the Market starting Friday, August 12th and continuing through Sunday August 14th, while supplies last.

Once again…starting Friday August 12th and continuing through Sunday August 14th White Seabass for $9.95 per pound or Halibut for $12.95 per pound. In the Market…while supplies last. If you would rather have us prepare it for you, both fish will also be featured as a variety of lunch and dinner specials in the Market and Restaurant through the weekend.

The extremely limited production of local salmon has kept us looking up and down the coast for a few fish to feed the salmon demand. After some searching we are also pleased to offer a few of troll-caught King “Chinook” Salmon from Bodega Bay Ca. These immaculate fish will be available in the Market for $19.95 per pound while supplies last.

We have had landings of Grenadier from Captain Nguyn of the “Golden Eagle,” Lingcod from Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” and Capt. Terra of the “Gusto,” Vermilion Rockfish from Capt. Burbach of the “Mas Fina,” and Blackcod from Capt. Arnoldi of the “Rosalena Marie.”

Thursday 28 July 2011

Ahoy,

Foggy mornings have been fading away, leaving us with beautiful afternoons and amazing sunsets this week. It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy some talented musicians, cold drinks, and tasty locally caught fish on our patio. The great weather has also made for some wonderful fishing conditions, and as if on cue, Halibut and White Seabass fishing has come alive allowing many of our local captains to capitalize on the bite and the weather.

While many have been enjoying the weather on shore, Capt. Schuyler of the “Flyer,” Capt. Nakazawa of the “Arima,” Capt. Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” and Capt. Loiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” have all been enjoying the weather at sea with successful trips of Halibut and White Seabass.

Because of their success, we will be featuring both Halibut and White Seabass in the market this weekend starting Friday, July 29th and continuing through Sunday July 31st. Halibut will be available for $14.95 per pound for fillets while White Seabass, will be available for $11.95 per pound for fillets. As always, these prices will be only available while supplies last so hurry in to get some delicious fish at a great price.

You may recall that we featured some wonderful White Seabass from Ventura and Marina Del Rey a few weeks ago however, this is the first local production that we have seen this summer. We hope that it’s a sign of more to come.

Finally, if you’re looking for something else, we have seen landings of Blackgill Rockfish from Capt. Cunningham of the “Tommy Lynn II,” Blackcod from Capt. Rose of the “Nikki J,” as well as Lingcod and assorted Rockfish from a handful of other local captains. We’ve also brought in some troll-caught Silver “Coho” Salmon from Canada as well as those tasty Halibut Cheeks from Alaska. We hope to see you this weekend!

Friday  22 July 2011

Ahoy,

Fishing this week continues to be limited and although we have seen nice weather on shore, the wind at sea has been picking up early, reducing the efforts of the fleet. The good news is that the forecast for the next few days calls for better weather and we hope to see to increased landings from many of our local captains.

Although the wind has limited many fisheries, Lingcod fishing remains steady and we have had consistent landings from Capt. Dyck of the “No Name,” Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” and Capt. Kann of the “C.” Lingcod will be available for $10.95 per pound in the Market and featured as a variety of specials in the Restaurant.

Capt. Arnoldi of the “Rosalena Marie,” filled our order this week for Blackcod and we are happy to see some of this fish stay local. Did you know that over ninety percent of all Blackcod is shipped overseas to the Asian market? The overseas demand for this velvety, moist and almost butter-like fish continues to skyrocket and unfortunately prices reflect this demand. With that said, those who enjoy this fish, really love it and we do our best to keep it available in the Market for $11.95 per pound.

Capt. Nungaray of the “Michael Too,” continues to search for local King Salmon and his efforts have landed only a couple fish this week. As you can imagine, those fish didn’t last long as the demand for local King Salmon has been high and unfortunately supplies have been low. We are however, still optimistic that we may see some better landings in the near future. Because of the limited supply, this week we have brought in a few troll-caught Silver “Coho,” Salmon from Alaska. These fish are an outstanding substitute when local Kings are not available. Comparatively, they have less omega-3 fatty acids than the Kings, resulting in a slightly drier finish after cooking. These fish are also considerably more budget friendly and will be available for $13.95 per pound in the Market.

A variety of other favorites are also available in the Market such as, Local Halibut, Pacific Halibut, Pacific Halibut Cheeks, and Yellowtail to name a few. Or if you would like to sit down and enjoy seafood cooked to perfection, Chef Joel will be putting his touches on a variety of fresh fish specials in the Restaurant throughout the weekend.

Thursday 14 July 2011

Ahoy,

This week we have a nice variety of fish in the market but supplies are somewhat limited and what we have won’t last long. With that said, we are pleased to once again have landings from good ol’ Capt Evans of the “Lucy L.” His efforts have brought us a few Halibut, Sand Sole, and Starry Flounder.

We also continue to see consistent landings of Lingcod from Capt. Campopiano of the “Island Hopper,” Capt. Tobin of the “Pleasure,” and Capt. Kann of the “C.” Those of you who have seen these fish in the market occasionally ask us about the bluish-green colored flesh they often have. Although there are a few wives tales about it being due to their diet, the color is actually due to a non-selective genetic trait. Diet can play a role in the flesh coloration of some fish species, but this is not the case for Lingcod. Interestingly, once the flesh is cooked it turns pure white. Some customers specifically ask for the green fillets, and believe that they have a better flavor, however we think that all shades taste the same. Lingcod will be available in the market for $10.95 per pound and also as “Fish of the Day,” in the restaurant throughout the weekend.

White Seabass fishing has slowed a bit this week and only Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” was able to land a few. His fish will be available this weekend but with the strong demand, may go quickly. Fillets will be available for $11.95 per pound in the market.

Salmon fishing has slowed to a crawl locally although landings have increased further up the coast. Due to the slowed pace, we have brought in a few Silver “Coho,” Salmon from Snow Pass Alaska. These fish are a great value at $13.95 per pound and although supplies this week are limited we hope to bring in a few more next week and run a great Salmon special.

Thursday 07 July 2011

Ahoy,

The 4th of July has come and gone with a bang just like last weeks fish specials! With the success of last week, we are once again proud to offer White Seabass for the amazing price of $9.95 per pound for fillets. In addition, this week we are able to offer whole White Seabass for $4.95 per pound. The whole fish price calculates out to about $9.00 per pound for fillets when you buy a whole fish. The fish this week average about 10 lbs. and their petite size makes it more manageable for those of you who would like to purchase a whole fish and save a few bucks. As always, we will cut them for you free of charge.

This weeks White Seabass were landed by local captains Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” and VanWagner of the “Pure Adrenaline,” who once again ventured south in order to catch a few of these immaculate fish. In addition, both captains had a few Halibut and Barracuda, which will also be available in the market while supplies last.

Other fishing has also been steady and the variety in our case reflects it. Capt. Nungaray of the Michael II and Capt. Riley of the “Lady Maxine,”were able to bring in a few King Salmon, Capt. Tobin of the “Pleasure’” has kept us in supply of Lingcod, Capt. Kann of the “C,” has had success with Vermillion Rockfish, Capt. Burbach of the “Mas Fina,” has landed some Gopher Rockfish, Capt. Rose of the “Nikki J,” has done well with Blackcod, and finally Capt. Cunningham continues to bring us Blackgill Rockfish. With that said, we’re sure to have something in the case to satisfy just about anybody.

Ahoy and Happy 4th of July,

Summer is definitely here on the Central Coast! BBQ’s are in the air and the 4th of July is right around the corner. What better time to throw an amazing piece of King Salmon or White Seabass on the grill? Due to the efforts of many local captains, this week you can… and at 4th of July special prices!!!

This week, Capt. Nakazawa of the “Arima,” Capt. VanWagner of the “Pure Adrenaline,” and Capt. Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” made the long trip south to Marina Del Rey in hopes of landing a few White Seabass. Their hopes “and ours,” were answered as all three captains had successful trips. Their success has enabled us to offer White Seabass this weekend for the amazing price of $9.95 per pound for fillets.

King Salmon fishing had an upswing this week and although it was not near enough to put together a sale from the decks of the Bonnie Marietta, several local fishermen including Capt. Sullivan of the “Star Lady,” Capt. Louiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” Capt. Arnoldi of the “Rosalena Marie,” Capt. Kennedy of the “Twilight Lady,” Capt. Nungaray of the “Michael Too,” and Capt’s. John and Jeff French of the “Langosta II,” all brought their Salmon to Dockside. Because of their efforts, we are able to offer these beautiful fish for $16.95 per pound for fillets, or if you would like to save a few bucks, you can purchase them whole for $8.95 per pound. Of course, as always, we will be glad to cut your fish free of charge if you decide to buy a whole one. Be advised the average size is about 15 pounds.

Both King Salmon and White Seabass will be available as 4th of July specials starting Friday, July 1st and continuing through Monday, July 4th while supplies last. Both fish will also be featured as daily specials, and White Seabass as “fish of the day,” in the restaurant.

Thursday 23 June 2011

Ahoy,

Calm seas have continued throughout most of the week allowing many fishermen to make up for lost time due to the ever-present May winds. Although Capt. Mark’s favorite fish the California King Salmon has had a very limited appearance thus far, other fishing remains good.

Since the reopening of Lingcod season on May 1st, many fishermen have enjoyed success in addition to their usual rockfish landings. Their efforts have helped keep the Lingcod market strong with consistent landings of some nice sized fish. Capt. Eaton of the “Curly,” Capt. Tobin of the “Pleasure,” Capt. Kann of the “C,” Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” Capt. Griffen of the “Ellie’s Way,” Capt. McGill of the “4 Baja,” and Capt. Appel of the “Klamath,” have all played a part in keeping us in supply of both Lingcod and assorted Rockfish.

Did you know that the term “Pacific Red Snapper,” is used to sell 60 or more different species of Rockfish? Other fish possessors and markets will typically fillet many different species of Rockfish and throw all the fillets together marketing them as “Pacific Red Snapper.” There really is no such fish and although most everyone else sells “Pacific Red Snapper,” you will never find us doing it here at Dockside. We believe that each of the Rockfish has it’s own merits and the consumer deserves to be told exactly what they are getting.

With that said…Capt. Cunningham of the “Tommy Lynn II,” and Capt Cullen of the “Dorado” delivered catches of Blackgill Rockfish, and Blackcod respectively. Capt. Nuygen of the “Golden Eagle,” also made it home with a good catch of Grenadier.

Many other captains have enjoyed good luck with California Halibut. Capt. Mowry of the “No Name,” Capt. Nakazawa of the “Arima,” Capt. Lousieau of the “Fast Eddie,” Capt. Dunn of the “Fog Dog,” Capt. Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” and Capt. Nailen of the “Seeker,” all had landings of local Halibut helping us to run another weekend special! So…starting tomorrow Friday, June 24, and continuing though Sunday, June 26 you find these local fishermen’s Halibut for $14.95 a pound in the market. You can also find their fish featured as specials all weekend in the restaurant.

And if that wasn’t enough…rounding out our fish this weekend are White Sea Bass from Santa Barbara and Halibut Cheeks from Alaska.

Thursday 16 June 2011

Ahoy,

Some fishing has been on the upswing this past week, and we are pleased to once again have strong supplies of local California Halibut. We received landings from many of our small boat captains including Capt. Conners of the “Silver Bullet,” Capt. Mowry of the “No Name,” Capt. Louiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” Capt. Nakazawa of the “Arima,” Capt. Dunn of the “Fog Dog,” and Capt. Schuyler of the “Flyer.” It couldn’t come at a better time with Father’s Day fast approaching. So, in honor of all the father’s out there, we are pleased to offer fresh, local, hook-and-line caught, California Halibut in both the Restaurant and Market. This succulent, mild and flaky fish will be available for $14.95 per pound in the Market starting Friday, June 17, and continuing though Sunday, June 19. You will also find it featured in a variety of specials in the Restaurant throughout the weekend.

Do you know that on the West coast, there are two different species of Halibut? 1. Pacific Halibut (also known as Alaskan) and 2. California Halibut. Both species look very similar however Pacific Halibut (Alaskan) can grow to over 400 pounds while California Halibut rarely grow over 50 pounds. Keep in mind that any other “Halibut,” that you may see “locally,” is really some other species of flatfish that is incorrectly labeled.

Lingcod fishing has also remained strong with consistent landings by Capt. Dyck of the “No Name II,” Capt. Tobin of the “Pleasure,” and Capt. Eaton of the “Curly.” Salmon fishing however, continues to be much the same with only a handful of landings throughout the week, so if your looking for local King Salmon hurry, because it won’t last long!

We wish you a wonderful Father’s Day and hope that you share your weekend with all those deserving fathers as well as us here at Dockside.

Thursday 9 June 2011

Ahoy,

Salmon season here on the Central Coast continues to be a grind with only an occasional fish here and there. Low scores have kept many local fishers in port, letting others burn fuel while they wait for the news that someone has found a few. Without the numbers of the fleet, locating any production is difficult as Capt. Gritzfeld of the “Roselynn,” and Capt. Campopiano of the “Island Hopper,” can attest. Their combined efforts have provided us with only a handful of fish for the week. Never the less, the few fish that have been caught have been some of the finest and most well taken care of fish that we have seen here at Dockside…. second only to the fish that Capt. Mark brings in himself.

Other fisheries and fishermen have faired a bit better. Capt. Nguyen of the “Golden Eagle,” has brought us another fine catch of Grenadier while Capt. Cunningham of the “Tommy Lynn 2,” continues to provide us with strong supplies of Blackgill Rockfish. Lingcod fishing also remains strong with landings from Capt. Tobin, Capt. Patchen and Capt. Burbach. Finally a few local Halibut continue to be brought in by Capt. Mowry of the “No Name,” and Capt. Louiseau of the “Fast Eddie.”

Thanks to everyone who showed your support for the annual “Pinot and Paella,” festival held in Templeton last Sunday. Dockside served amazing Seafood Paella with local Lingcod and Blackgill Rockfish, as well as Spiny Lobster, Clams, Mussels, Shrimp, Bay Scallops and Halibut Cheeks. Mmmmmm……. It was Delicious! . Proceeds of the event went to help the Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation. This is a great event with great wine and food, so mark your calendars for next year as I’m sure it will be even bigger and better!

Thursday 3 June 2011

Ahoy and Good Morning,

First an update on the Salmon season that at this time continues to be a lot of fishing and very little catching.

The commercial California King Salmon season remains open south of Pt. Sur but closes for the month of June north of there. Just prior to the June closure there was a small squirt of fish off Bodega Bay, but it has been slim pickings everywhere else including here in our local waters. Because of this, we do not currently have any to offer. Sad news but it could change overnight and we always hope for the best.

As far as other local fisheries… The spring winds quit for several days this week and many fishers jumped at the opportunity. Their success has rewarded us here at Dockside and our supply of other fish is strong once again!

The Lingcod fishing remains good with Capt. Griffen of the “Ellie’s Way,” Capt. Patchen of the “Kaps,” Capt. Louiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” Capt. Kann of the “Dream Chaser,” Capt. Appel of the “Klamath,” and Capt. Eaton of the “Curly,” all providing fish for us here at Dockside.

Capt. Nakazawa of the “Arima,” and Capt. Mowry of the “No Name,” both had a few Halibut, while Capt. Cunningham of the “Tommy Lynn II” added a fine catch of both Blackgill Rockfish and Blackcod. Finally Capt. Nguyen of the “Golden Eagle,” helped round out the local production for us with one of our favorites…Grenadier.

We hope you all enjoyed last weekend and had a chance to remember our fallen Veterans. There were so many wonderful events in our communities in their honor. One must reflect on those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for us to continue to be proud Americans.

Thursday 27 May 2011

Ahoy,

The onset May and the beginning of Salmon season has been off to a slow start with only a few fish coming across local docks. Limited production and windy conditions have kept many fishermen in port waiting for a break in the weather. The only sure thing during the spring here on the central coast is that there will be plenty of wind, and this week has been a testament to that.

A handful of fishermen continue to head out during the mornings before the winds pick up, however their production has definitely reflected the difficult conditions. The good news is that groundfish fishing has been steady when the weather permits as Capt. Louiseau, of the “Fast Eddie,” Capt. Tobin of the “Pleasure,” Capt. Eaton of the “Curly,” and Capt. Nakazawa of the “Arima,” have all brought us catches of Lingcod and assorted Rockfish.

Capt. Mark and the “Bonnie Marietta,” plan to give it a shot this next week weather permitting, to see if he can find a few King Salmon of his own. Of course we are hopeful that production this season will reach a point where we can once again back in and sell off the decks of the “Bonnie Marietta,” but in the mean time we hope that he is able to replenish our supplies here at Dockside.

Thank you to everyone who came out last weekend to support Dockside’s annual 4th of July fundraiser. Hard to believe, but we cooked and served approximately 200 dozen BBQ oysters from 1-6pm! Wow! The event was a huge success and 100% of the proceeds went directly to help keep the firework show in Morro Bay.

Thursday 19 May 2011

Ahoy,

First, we would like to apologize for the absence of our weekly posting last week. Life sometimes throws one a curve and we always have a tough time hitting the curve. If it’s straight and fast we are fine, so we will make this week’s posting exactly that.

Salmon fishing remains spotty at best with high daily scores rarely making it into double digits and most daily catches countable on one hand. It is however, still early in the season and the catching can take off at a moments notice.

The few Salmon that were landed this week’s are brought to you by Capt. Ron Troutman of the “Autumn Star.” It’s the first time that we have had the pleasure of receiving fish from Ron and they were a pleasant surprise. Supplies are limited but both the Market and the Restaurant are featuring these local (Point Sal) and beautiful King Salmon.

Other fisher’s remain active, as there has been some limited effort when the May winds haven’t been blowing a gale. Capt. David Rose of the “Niki J,” blessed us with our Blackgill Rockfish while Capt. Evans was out and about and his Halibut, Angel Shark, Turbot, and Sand Sole will all be available at the Market while supplies last. Capt. Tobin and his right hand gal rookie Capt. Doyle of the “Pleasure,” had some outstanding Lingcod fishing as well as did Capt. Burbach of the “Mas Fina,” and Capt. Eaton of the “Curly.”

Straight, fast and to the point!

On a last note, if you can make it to Dockside Too this Sunday, May 22nd we will be offering a dozen BBQ oysters and a pitcher of beer for 20 bucks! 100% of these sales will be Docksides donation to Morro Bay’s Fourth of July Celebration. We hope to see you there!

Thursday 05 May 2011

Ahoy, and Salmon Season Greetings!

For all you long time email recipients thanks for your continued support and for those of you who have joined us this past winter we welcome you aboard. Our weekly email posting for the Bonnie Marietta and Dockside Restaurant and Fish Market always start the first week in May and continue though the last week in September, with other occasional postings the balance of the year.

The answer to the big question this year is Yes! We do have a local Salmon season. Fishermen on the central coast will see about 80% of the access that we usually get in a standard full season. The further north one goes the more restrictive the season becomes, but there is good opportunity for King Salmon throughout California this year.

Although Capt. Mark and the Bonnie Marietta are ready to put the lines in the water, some prior family and business commitments have kept him ashore. The good news is that because the catching has been very limited so far, he has not missed any real production.

With that said, we do have local troll caught King Salmon available in both the Market and the Restaurant. It will also be featured as a special this Sunday for Mother’s Day in the Restaurant. Capt. Kann of the “C,” Capt. Nungaray of the “Michael Too,” and Capt. Rasmussen of the “Sundowner,” have been responsible for the first King Salmon of the season, and a great hearted thanks goes out to them for their efforts.

In addition, we are also grateful for an unexpected late season supply of Dungeness Crab from Capt.’s John and Jeff French of the “Nadine.” Good ol’ Capt. Evans of the “Lucy L,” has had a few Sand Sole and Turbot to add to our case, while Capt.’s Tobin of the “Pleasure,” Campopiano, and Bingham of the “Island Hopper,” Eaton of the “Curly,” Loiseau of the “Fast Eddie,” Patchen of the “Kaps,” and Burbach of the “Mas Fina,” have supplied us with Lingcod and assorted Rockfish. Finally Capt. Cunningham of the “Tommy Lynn II,” has topped us off with both Blackcod and Blackgill Rockfish.

For most of the fleet, May has been off to a good start and it’s nice to see landings from a variety of different fishermen and fisheries. Capt. Mark is hopeful that Salmon catching will improve, as he is anxious to sell from the decks of the “Bonnie Marietta” just like the “old days”.

In closing, the biggest THANK YOU needs to go out to all our Mother’s as they made it all possible. Happy Mothers Day!

Tuesday 03 March 2011

Ahoy Mates & Happy March!

The onset of the month along with all the wind and rain we've been having seems to have stirred up a lot of White Seabass, as there has been an amazing winter run of these fish during the last couple of days. Normally the majority of local White Seabass production is during the summer and fall, when the water is warmer and feed is plentiful. However, it seems as though a few of these fish have stuck around this winter and thanks to the efforts of Capt's. Mowry, Losieau, Campopiano, and Nakazawa for MARCH-ing their catches in to us here at Dockside!

So far these fish have been ranging in size from about 20 pounds all the way up to almost 50 pounds! We think the best way to describe White Seabass is to say that it is similar to Halibut in flavor, but much more moist and with larger flakes. Preparation of White Seabass is limitless as it's thick mild fillets are firm yet flaky and it's ability to retain moisture can make even the most challenged chefs seem like a pro!

With that said, this week we will be featuring local White Seabass fillets in the Fish Market for $11.95 per pound, while supplies last. And for those of you who would rather have us prepare it, our incredibly talented Chef Joel will be featuring it in a variety of specials here in the Restaurant.

Other local fishing has been strong and steady as well. Halibut production from Capt's. Evans, Baker and Schuyler, and Capt. Leage and Cunningham have kept us supplied with tasty Blackgill Rockfish.

Cheers to the continuous efforts of all of our local Captains!

Capt. Mark & Miss Bonnie Tognazzini, Family & Crew

Well, did you know…..

Rumor has it that Capt. Cupid will be fluttering into Dockside this weekend with a nice load of Dungeness Crabs! Actually Capt. Arnoldi of the “Rosalena Marie” will be delivering these delightful crabs direct from Half Moon Bay, so we have nicknamed him Capt. Cupid instead, ha ha!

So mark your calendars and grab your honey for a Valentine’s Day Dockside Crabfest on Monday, February 14th!

We will be featuring Dungeness Crabs for lunch or dinner with your choice of wonderful Dockside sides for only $21.95. What a delicious way to celebrate Valentines Day with your sweetheart, favorite person, family, or friends. Call and reserve yours now.

Other noteworthy fishing news here at Dockside includes a strong and steady production of local Halibut by Capt. Evans of the “Lucy L”. He along with his grandson, Danny have had several good weeks of fishing and have been providing us with Halibut, Sand Sole and Turbot in their daily catch.

Capt. Cunningham also continues his regular supply of Blackgill Rockfish and Blackcod, while Capt.’s Nakazawa, Mowry, McGill, Patchen, and Griffen have all contributed nice catches of assorted Rockfish and a few Halibut.

Happy Valentine’s Day from,

Capt. Mark & Miss Bonnie Tognazzini, Family & Crew

We would like to thank other fishermen who after watching a series of winter storms go by have made it back on the grounds and harvested some great fish for all of you to enjoy. Capt. Cunningham of the “Tommy Lynn,” has been the “King,” of the Blackgill Rockfish and Blackcod production. Capt. Evans of the “Lucy L,” at 87 years young is still at it, and he continues to provide us with a regular supply of Halibut and Sand Sole. Finally, Capt. Patchen, Capt Nakazawa, and Capt. McGill all help round out our selection with a nice assortment of Vermilion, Brown, and Copper Rockfish. Thanks guys!
